Every day of our lives is precious. If you’re anything like me, many days…weeks…months fly by before we know it. When we no longer feel in control of our days, it’s disheartening. But we can perform simple, gracious acts, even in the midst of our too-busy lives, to seize at least a portion of our day and restore our spirits. Try one of these, or discover one of your own:
1) Go for a Walk, preferably somewhere that offers natural surroundings. Not only will the exercise be good for your body, the fresh surroundings and stress-relieving atmosphere will lighten your spirits.
2) Plant Something. Stick a seed or baby plant in soil and watch it take on a life of its own. Even a single pot on a patio, balcony, or front stoop can provide a place to grow lush flowers, a miniature citrus tree, or your personal tomato plant.
3) Create Art. Sketch a tree, a person, or animal. The process of close observation required to draw or paint a picture of it exercises the mind. It’s also fun!
4) Write a Poem. Playing with words to create a funny, moving, or thoughtful pattern is calming and satisfying. It can be two words or go on for pages.
5) Start Your Book. You know you’ve always wanted to write the story that’s been tumbling around in your head for years. There’s no time like the present. Write the first sentence…paragraph…page. You’re off and running!
6) Bake Yourself an Unbirthday Cake. Celebrate being alive, being unique, being YOU! Don’t like or want sweets? Make your favorite meal. Nourish yourself.
7) Do a Kind Deed. Make someone else’s day a little special. Overtip, hold a door for a stranger, donate to your favorite charity. You’re creating healthy karma, and you’ll feel wonderful for being the special, thoughtful person you are.
